Do you know your Asschers from your cushions? Your Princess from your Brilliant?
Here we have put together details of 10 of the most popular gemstone & diamond shape.
Which is your favourite?
Round Brilliant Cut
The most popular diamond shape is the round cut. Also called round brilliant cut, this cut has 58 facets and is usually considered the best cut for bringing out the brilliance in a gemstone.
A round cut gem is usually used as a solitaire in a wedding or an engagement ring.
Princess Cut
The princess cut is the second most popular cut shape for gemstones, next to a round brilliant. The face-up shape of the princess cut is square or rectangular and the profile or side-on shape is similar to that of an inverted pyramid with four beveled sides.
Emerald Cut
The emerald cut gemstone has a square shape and tapered corners. Compared to the round cut, the emerald cut diamond has fewer facets, and so it has fewer surfaces that reflect light.
Asscher Cut
The modern asscher cut gemstone is similar to a square emerald cut, usually with larger step facets, a higher crown, and a smaller table. This combination often produces more brilliance than the emerald cut.
Cushion Cut
A cushion cut is a square or rectangular shape with rounded corners that resemble a pillow. Cushion cuts have large facets allowing for a greater separation of white light into spectral colours.
Marquise Cut
A marquise cut gemstone is an elliptical shape with pointed ends, usually faceted in a brilliant cut to give it all kinds of gorgeous sparkle.
Oval Cut
The oval cut gemstone has an elegant and classic look and can look very flattering in a ring. It is a timeless choice that will never go out of style. An oval cut is often used as a centrepiece and combined with smaller stones on each side.
Pear Cut
The modified brilliant-cut pear shaped gemstone is a combination of a round and a marquise shape, with a tapered point on one end. Ideally, a pear shaped gem should possess excellent or very good symmetry.
Heart Cut
Like pear-shaped gemstones, heart-shaped rocks can be "fatter" or more elongated, and the sparkle and beauty of this shape are defined by the skill and precision of the cutter.
Trilliant Cut
A trilliant cut, sometimes called a trillion or trillian, is a triangular type of gemstone cut. The cut has many variations. It may have curved or uncurved sides. The shape of the top surface, or table, also varies.
